1. Who can I talk to about how I’m feeling?
Adoptions First has a licensed therapist and other birthmothers for you to talk to about how you are feeling. This is one of the most important and difficult decisions you can ever make and you deserve to have professional support throughout your entire process.
2. Do I have to pay for the adoption?
No, the adoption is paid for by the adopting parents. There is no cost to you as the birth mother. Additionally, most states allow birthmothers to receive help with living expenses such as rent, phone, utilities, food, transportation, and maternity clothes.
3. Can I talk to another birthmother?
Yes, we have birthmothers who have placed their baby for adoption with Adoptions First families. They are available for you to talk to. They can share their experience and help you in making your own decision.
4. If I need a place to live, can you help me?
Yes, we can help you move into a new place of your choice to live.
5. How do you know the adopting parents are a safe family for my baby?
All of our adopting parents have been referred by people we know. We only work with adopting parents that have an approved Home Study from a licensed agency.
6. Can I choose the adopting parents for my baby?
Yes, the birth mother can choose the adopting parents. You tell us what you want in a family for your baby and we will share profiles of adopting parents that match what you are looking for.
7. Can I talk to and meet the adopting parents for my baby?
Yes, you can get to know the adopting parents as much or as little as you want. All of our families are open to getting to know you and spending time with you before and after your baby is born. Most of our birthmothers and adopting parents continue to talk, text, share pictures and updates. Ongoing relationships can include visits as well. We will make sure you select a family who is open to the level of future contact you desire.
8. Will I be all alone?
No, we will be there for you as much as you want us to. We will hold your hand throughout your pregnancy and help you with anything you need. We will also be there for you after you have your baby. We have birth mothers that keep in touch for many years after.
9. What happens when I go into labor without choosing adopting parents?
If you do not have adopting parents picked out when you go into labor, do not worry. We will work together to choose adopting parents for your baby. Your baby will not go into Foster Care. Your baby will go home with a family of your choice.
10. What happens when I go into labor and I have already chosen adopting parents?
If you have adopting parents chosen for your baby, you will have made a hospital plan with Adoptions First and the adoptive family. When you go into labor you will call the adopting parents and your Adoptions First Specialist and we will follow your plan. We respect the wishes of the birth mother throughout the entire journey.
11. How do I talk to my other children about adoption?
That can be a scary conversation to start. Your Adoptions First Specialist will share with you how other birth mothers have talked to their children about adoption.
12. Will anyone know my business?
No, everything is private and confidential. The only people that will know about your adoption are the people that you choose to share it with.
13. Where are you located?
We have offices and affiliates all over the country. If you would like to meet, we can come meet you. If you do not want to meet, that is fine too. We work with many birth mothers by phone each and every day.
14. Can I call you if I am unsure of my decision?
Yes, you can call us anytime. We will never pressure you to make a decision. We want the decision to be yours. You can call or text us anytime to talk about adoption without making a commitment.
